This Jan Steen painting probably has a lot to do with the male gaze, but all I can think is "Damn, those socks must’ve been tight."
In an unusual break from the chaotic household scenes we’re used to seeing from Jan Steen. Looks like he got a little horny and decided to paint a half-naked lady instead. Mind you, that’s half naked by 17th century standards, which (when you adjust for inflation) is more like an eighth naked today. Steen painted a nearly identical scene where you’re looking through a window and the woman is looking right at you. Both versions clearly cater to voyeuristic fetishes, but this one is a little creepier. It’s like she doesn’t even know you’re there, and I don’t want to know what the reaction was when she looked up after finally getting that horrible sock off.
This painting was so scandalous that up until a hundred years ago, there was an underskirt painted over her thighs.
Also, that puppy kinda sucks as a guard dog if it’s just going to sleep through some rando hanging out in her room as she’s getting undressed. Painting her no less. Bad dog.

It's a Jan Steen painting, so there is a chance she had a few drinks. At least she has the wherewithal to take off her shoes!
