Art and Fashion Part 1 - Naomi Campbell

Edna Mode has things to say about “super"models …

Okay, so maybe fashion isn’t super intellectual in the way astrophysics is and it probably won’t change the world the way a cure for cancer will, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do cool stuff with it. Combining high fashion photo shoots with great works of art proves it’s not just air in our heads. Combining the two gives some credibility to the former, and the result is oh-so-right.

Our first example was actually proposed by poofy-lipped supermodel, Naomi Campbell. You don’t say no to Naomi Campbell unless you want a cellphone aimed at your head. She wanted to pay homage to Paul Gauguin’s beautiful paintings of tropical paradises and exotic women. The editorial was photographed by Peter Lindbergh in Somerset Falls, Jamaica and appeared in Harper’s Bazaar in 1992. It really is a gorgeous photo shoot; the clothes, by Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Lacroix, are full of brocade flowers and sumptuous details.

The photo that most resembles Gauguin’s work is this one, done like Spirit of the Dead Watching:

It creates the sexy look Gauguin was going for without any of the pedophile undertones. GOOD. Plus if you’re gonna look at an ass why not make it Naomi Campbell’s? In 2008, collector of supermodel pictures, Gert Elfering, sold parts of his collection and this picture went for double the estimated price at $49,000.

Here are a few more pictures that actually feature clothing:

Next up we have a photo shoot and interview with Academy Award winners actresses Julianne Moore and Nicole Kidman and nominee Jessica Chastain
