OK so maybe the new Muppets show isn’t going to be X-rated (apparently much to the internet’s chagrin), but certain amphibian insiders have said that it’s a “sort of adult” version of everyone’s favorite childhood show.
With that in mind, I went out and found a grand collection of “sort of adult” muppet art history parodies! [Editor’s note: don’t google “naughty muppets.” Can’t unsee.]
For example. :(
ABC president Paul Lee said, “this isn’t your grandmother’s Muppets.” And this ain’t your grandma’s art history, kids.
We’ll start out fairly tame to let you catch your breath from the blasphemous images above.
Here’s Miss Piggy starring in Sandro Botticelli’s Birth of Venus. Like the original, all the proper bits are covered. But the old guys perving from the invisible balcony still skeeve me out…
This recreation of Rembrandt’s Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp by artist Hillary White is particularly troubling, as the whole Sesame Street gang gleefully looks on while Big Bird slices up Kermit. I don’t know about you, but I’m having big guilt about that frog dissection in 9th grad bio.
Following the porcine aquatic/ dissection theme (my job is weird) here we see Miss Piggy having a contemporary moment, replacing Damien Hirst’s shark!
Special thanks to Xiao for making my vision come true…
Pickled pig’s hooves are a thing in, like…Poland, right?
Here’s the original. Hirst has pulled this stunt with everything from a cow to a unicorn and according to this hilariously British article he’s running out of ideas so, you know, muppets are probably next.
WHY WOULD BEAKER BEHEAD HIS BELOVED BUNSON?? And he and Gonzo look so upset!!!
At least in Artemesia Gentilischi’s version of Judith Beheading Holofernes the ladies seem chill!
Here’s a weird sperm-y Elmo slug a la Salvador Dali to haunt your dreams.
Here’s Animal impersonating Francisco Goya’s Saturn Devouring His Own Son. This one for some reason doesn’t bother me. Maybe it’s because Animal’s my fav muppet, or perhaps my vegetarian instincts are saying it’s about time they turned the tables.
And for the grande finale, the man who always takes the prize for “Most Bizarre”………….Hieronymus Bosch!
As if Garden of Earthly Delights wasn’t weird enough, this anonymous artist painted the muppets living inside Jim Henson’s unfathomable eggshell butt crack!!! Simply. Perfection.
And as a parting gift, Lady Gaga outfitted in a bunch of dead Kermits:
That adult enough for ya, ABC?
