Emanuel Leutze was an American transplant who hailed from Germany originally and just could not make up his mind.

He moved between the good ol' US of A and Deutschland several times during his (unfortunately short) life. He died in Washington, D.C. of, bizarrely, heatstroke at age 52. Leutze's short life was also kind of depressing. He discovered and developed his artistic talents while nursing his terminally ill father. He would spend longs hours drawing and dreading Daddy's inevitable demise. After his father’s death, he started selling his paintings for $5 a piece to keep afloat. As gloomy as this was for Leutze, art history nerds around the world rejoiced because these solemn times produced quite a talented artist.

Best known for his painting Washington Crossing the Delaware, Leutze was enamored with painting American history. While he is not exactly praised for his technical skills, most people identify him as a great painter due to his ability to evoke feelings of patriotism. USA! USA! See? It worked.
