Ana Mendieta’s piece, Silueta en Fuego is literally and figuratively en fuego.

Mendieta created an entirely new form of art called "earth body" art in her series Siluetas. This new genre combined her naked body with the elements, earth, fire, water and air. So she’s kind of like Avatar the Last Airbender, except she’s the only person who can control any of the elements. And the closest the rest of us can get to affecting the elements is farting.

This silhouette in particular is concerned with Mendieta’s pyromania and deep-seated anger at the patriarchy. The piece is an impression of her body in the ground which she then set on fire. The video of the work lasts until the flame completely simmers out, which gives a “this is the way the world ends, not with a bang but a whimper” vibe to the piece. This fire represents Mendieta’s internal firey rage against the treatment of women in the 1970s, which all started with a rape and murder that happened on her college campus. From that point on, women on campus had the pleasure of being scared at every moment that they would be the next victim. And just in case that wasn’t enough, Mendieta’s work was not getting the attention that it deserved purely because she was a woman. Her husband Carl Andre on the other hand was doing swimmingly. It was like the days of Abstract Expressionism all over again except for much worse because at least Pollock and de Kooning didn’t actually murder their wives!
