Despite what it may look like, the food is in fact going into Frida’s body not coming (shooting more like) out of it… 

In the later part of her life, Frida had minimal appetite and became super thin so doctors put her on an incredibly strict eating regimine, which really fuqed with her body. She couldn’t keep anything down and wrote on the back of this painting, "Not the least hope remains to me... Everything moves in time with what the belly dictates..." This rather pessimistic outlook could be a direct result of the fact that her eating schedule took over her painting schedule. In this work, Frida’s easel is holding up a funnel full of meats and things rather than a canvas. No wonder she didn’t have any hope, she wasn’t allowed to do the one thing that made her happy. They should have thrown her a metaphorical bone instead of chicken and fish bones and just let her paint.

You’ll notice that there is a human skull amongst all of the things being funneled into Frida’s body. No, she did not try cannibalism in an attempt to gain back some weight. If you look closely, the skull has her name written on the forehead. This was one of the many gifts that Diego gave Frida while she was in the hospital. Nothing says “Get well soon” like a frickin human skull. I mean come on… was he thinking at all?!

At this point Frida was just really sick of the whole thing - “the whole thing” being life. Which is understandable given all of the messed up shiet that she went through. She said of death, “I hope the exit is joyful and I hope never to return.” That’s the spirit.
