Hey sleepyheads, good news. It’s World Sleep Day, and at Sartle, we understand the importance of a good nap. And artists do, too. Andy Warhol made a 5 hour movie of his friend John sleeping.
It’s probably because artists don’t have the burden of a 9-5 gig. I mean, not only do they not have to deal with pesky things like rush hour or alarm clocks…they can work in their pajamas (Ah, la vie bohème), and as such, they have plenty of time to sneak up on unsuspecting dreamers and become inspired by their gentle snores…
or disturb their peaceful slumber…
Sleeping Venus by Eustache Le Sueur at Legion of Honor Museum. From Sartle’s Word of Art series.
So take advantage of this sacred day of sleep. Turn off the lights, snuggle up and let these artworks lull you into a niiiiice, loooong……….ZZzzzzzZZZzzzzZzz.
Now Lucian Freud had the right idea with Sunny Morning Eight Legs. Sartle is a dog friendly (OK, dog fanatic) office and we all love nothing more than curling up with our warm pups for a cozy snuggle. Could probably do without the creepy man under the bed, but when it comes to canine cuddle time…we’re not picky.
If Jasper fits, he sits. (Then sleeps.)
And NO ONE disturbs Bailey’s slumber.
Work may make us tired, but nothin’ gets you horizontal like a good party. Sometimes you even have to conk out before it’s over…
Drunk Couple by Jan Steen at Rijksmuseum
Hold her calls, because that lady is not a-vailable.
Interior of a Pub by Adriaen Brouwer at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen
Total zen moment.
As you can see, there’s no one way to meet the Sandman.
Sleeping Venus and Cupid by Nicolas Poussin at Old Masters Picture Gallery (Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister)
Some of us are back sleepers who like to be doted on by flying babies…
Sleeping Hermaphrodite by Gian Lorenzo Bernini at Musée du Louvre
while others of us are stomach sleepers who like a firm pillow.
Plenty of people do it in the buff…
Flaming June by Frederic Leighton at Museo de Arte de Ponce
…while some don their finest nighties. (Who ya trying to impress, June??)
In any case, the artists have spoken. Take a load off and we’ll see you in the morning.
