Works by Jean Dubuffet

Good art is best enjoyed with a good bottle of wine. Jean Dubuffet had both at his disposal, for he was a talented French artist as well as a wine merchant.

Dubuffet lived an extravagant life, painting nude females, and hanging out with famous poets and writers (Henri Michaux, Francis Ponge, Jean Paulhan), talking with Antonin Artaud (the creator of Theater of Cruelty), and working with the American composer Jasun Martz.

Maybe this is where he learned to play the nose flute, as pictured here. (We thought it was a Hannibal Lecter impression, but apparently, the nose flute is a thing).

Here is what Wikipedia says about Jean Dubuffet

Jean Philippe Arthur Dubuffet (

French pronunciation: [ʒɑ̃ filip aʁtyʁ dybyfɛ]; 31 July 1901 – 12 May 1985) was a French painter and sculptor of the Ecole de Paris (School of Paris). His idealistic approach to aesthetics embraced so-called "low art" and eschewed traditional standards of beauty in favor of what he believed to be a more authentic and humanistic approach to image-making. He is perhaps best known for founding the art movement art brut, and for the collection of works—Collection de l'art brut—that this movement spawned. Dubuffet enjoyed a prolific art career, both in France and in America, and was featured in many exhibitions throughout his lifetime.
