Paul Pfeiffer is a major frustration to sports fans everywhere, but is the savior of those of us who don’t know the difference between a free throw and a layup.
Pfeiffer’ art consists of old basketball game and UFC fight footage, with some some decently important parts of the game, like the players or the ball, photoshopped out. You never realize the full extent of the sh*t that gets kicked out of UFC fighters until you see the ripples of their skin flap from a hit that seemingly comes from nowhere. But I digress. Pfeiffer lets his audience piece together what’s missing and in the process hopes that they see things that they probably wouldn’t if they could enjoy the game in peace. The result of this work can range anywhere from frustrating and confusing to completely disorienting. But for those of us who just really don’t care about the sports realm, it finally adds some intrigue to men in shorts displaying their masculinity via inanimate objects.
It all started in 1966 in Honolulu, Hawaii where Pfeiffer was born. At the age of ten he was relocated to the Philippines and from there went to the U.S. He had art in his blood as his parents were both classically trained musicians so it was no surprise when he got his BFA at the San Francisco Art Institute and his MFA at Hunter College in New York. It was also no surprise that he stayed in New York afterwards, though I’m sure the Knicks and the Yankees aren’t super grateful to have him there. (See? I know sports stuff.)
