Hogarth's Rake is flat broke and committed to not working a day of his life. In painting five of the series "A Rake's Progres" his solution is to marry a rich elderly woman.

His former fiancé, who used her savings to keep the Rake out of debtor’s prison, is jilted for a second time (the first time is in The Heir).

Tom’s strategy is a good one, it’s the 1700s and by law, husbands are all-powerful. They can do whatever they want with their wives’ wealth.

While Tom is getting ready to slide a ring on his elderly lovely’s finger, Hogarth’s own pug, Pugg, is working his charm on a one-eyed bitch.
