This colossal painting will greet you as you enter the Oakland Museum's art gallery. Approximately 6'x10', Keith clearly intended it to be a show-stopper.
Depending on how you feel about the grandeur and romance of these early Western landscapes, you might find this piece breathtaking or gaudy. I don't think there's a middle ground.
Considering that Keith was known for embelleshing his paintings, it's hard to know how much of this vista ever really existed and how much of it consists of Keith's "improvements." Perhaps this is why Keith's close buddy John Muir openly referred to him as a "poet-painter," an affectionate euphemism for his refusal to depict the wilderness accurately.
