David Wojnarowicz will not apologize and he will not back down.
Wojnarowicz made it his personal life goal to dismantle the political right-wing rule of our country and fight for the rights of marginalized and stigmatized minorities. A favorite target of the conservative community during the culture wars of the 1980s, Wojnarowicz willingly took on the role of scapegoat for his ostracized community. For Wojnarowicz, there is no separation between art and activism, and pretty much all of his work brings to light the issues of the oppressed members of our culture, primarily the gay community and those suffering from AIDS.
In typical Wojnarowicz fashion, this painting is dark, twisted and mesmerizing nonetheless...just like the artist himself. Wojnarowicz is taking us on a stroll through the American history books. Apparently, Wojnarowicz feels the testosterone drenched sport of bull riding, a handful of blood, some meat, and a fly with a human face represent American history. I should probably clarify that Wojnarowicz barely made it out of high school so perhaps we should not rely on him for the most accurate portrayal of historical events. What we can count on him for is his ability to deliver a stiff slap across the face to anyone who tries to shut him up, leaving us to wonder, who is the poor victim at the other end of that voodoo doll?
Clearly a criticism of our media, this Wojnarowicz piece is most likely hating on those who have a loud voice in our country and speaking out for those who don't. Then again, the news has always been a source of contention amongst all areas of our populace. Agenda pushing is nothing new and with, um, certain political figures waging a war with the media today, we can only assume this issue is not going away anytime soon. It's probably a good thing Wojnarowicz is not around to see the state of things today...then again, he would have so much material to work with!
