Everyone knows that miniature versions of anything are way cuter than the original so Maurizio Cattelan created the cutest 1-foot-tall elevator of all time.

It is complete with a tiny little call button, tiny little flourescent lights and an adorable tiny little ding when the door opens. If only there were tiny little speakers to play tiny, tedious elevator music!!

Cattelan is the art world jokester and as such is really good at playing mind games. With this work, the mind game is akin to the scene in Alice in Wonderland when she eats the cookies that say “Eat Me” and becomes giant. We, like young Alice, feel giant when standing next to the tiny little door. But alas there is no bottle that says “Drink Me” so that we can fit inside the elevator. Not that we would want to anyways because a) it doesn’t go anywhere b) imagine the claustrophobia being trapped in a 1 foot tall elevator and c) no matter the size of the elevator, the small talk that goes on inside of them is soul-crushing.

So why create a tiny elevator that no one can fit in? Cattelan wants to oh-so-generously point out the tedium of our lives by making us think about how much time we waste waiting for/riding in elevators. It’s pretty ridiculous if you think about it. So quit your boring job and stop wasting your life in tiny metal boxes that are full of monotonous people and their unsubtle fart-coverups! Get out there and live!
