Giving sculpture a whole new meaning, Richard Wilson is one of Britain’s leading installation artists.

Lamentably, only one of his works (20:50) is in a permanent collection. Charles Saatchi asked him to recreate this work in the Saatchi Gallery. Trippy beyond belief, his work messes with our normally perceived notions of space and also draws on aspects of engineering and building.

Wilson said he wanted to “tweak or undo or change the interiors of space... in that way unsettle or break peoples preconceptions of space, what they think space might be”. No question about that. He once cut off a sizeable chunk of a ship and placed it on the riverbed near the Millennium Dome in London, and called this piece A Slice of Reality.

And for you film fanatics – his piece Hang on Lads, I’ve got an Idea, was a recreation of the last scene of the 2003 film, The Italian Job. It was featured at the 2012 London Olympics and starring in this display was a life-sized model of the precariously balanced bus on a rooftop. During the closing ceremony, accompanied by dialogue from the very scene, there was a massive KA-BOOM! which blew the piece to smithereens. An architectural artist beyond compare AND he blows shit up. Can we make him a knight already?
